Moving House? 5 Ways to Make Moving Day Less Stressful!

Moving house is always exciting- a chance to start fresh, a blank canvas to make your own and the opportunity to live life the way you want. However, moving day itself is never easy, and in fact is one of the most stressful life events a person can go through! Thankfully there are ways to make it a little easier, here are some ideas.

5 Ways to Make Moving Day Less Stressful!

Create a bag of essentials

When you’re moving your entire life from A to B in boxes, it’s difficult to know where anything is if you end up needing it before it’s unpacked. To avoid this from happening, make up a bag or box of essentials that you can keep with you- which will make moving day run much more smoothly. Include any important paperwork or documents that you might need, and some bin liners and cleaning products to give everything the once over when you arrive. Bring your phone chargers, a mug and even the kettle with some tea bags! Think of what you’ll need over the course of the hours spent moving and once you’re in that will make life a little easier.

Have kids and pets looked after

Trying to look after pets and/ or kids while you pack boxes, load moving vans and drive to and fro to the new place can be stressful. Not just for you, but for them as well. If you can, have a loved one look after them for the day, and bring them back around once everything is in. It can help them to settle a bit better, and it’s one less thing for you to worry about. If you have cats that aren’t house cats, making sure they’re in the house ready to go into their carriers is a smart move especially if you’re moving a little way away.

Get your address changed before the day

There’s a million and one things that need to be done when you move house, so to reduce stress on the day, do what you can ahead of time. One thing you can do once everything is finalised with your moving date is to change your address. Think about your work, kids schools, doctors, dentists, bills, your car and anywhere you order from online which would have your old address stored. Getting this done and out of the way can really help you to feel on top of everything .

Order a takeaway

After a long day, chances are the last thing you’ll want to do after moving house is cook. You might not even have your kitchen equipment unpacked, and could even be waiting for appliances like your cooker to be delivered. Give yourself a night off and order a takeaway, if you go with something like pizza or burgers you don’t need to worry about plates or cutlery!

Make up the beds

Even if you don’t manage to unpack much (or anything!) after you go through the stress of moving house, one thing that’s worth doing is your beds. Having a comfortable place to sleep that feels familiar will help you to settle in quicker. Chances are you’ll need a good night’s sleep that night! If you’re using a moving company like Chess Moving, ask them to bring the beds upstairs to the place where they’ll go in each room, rather than leave them downstairs for the night and ‘make do’. Make them up properly with clean sheets, have them washed before you pack them up rather than waiting until you’re at the new place. With plenty of unpacking to do in the morning, it makes sense to be as well rested as possible.
