Every room has a soul. It’s not created by what’s more or less in the center, but by what surrounds the center itself. This can be the curtains, walls, skirting boards, coving, ceiling and lighting. These are things that we rarely look at directly, but without them, we wouldn’t have a room. The life of any room is given by its four walls, so you must pay attention to what kind of wallpaper, paint scheme and design you have. The skirting boards are almost out of sight, but their height and style dictate how much of the room we look at. Walking into a room without skirting boards, you will feel as if it’s unfinished and the floor is too quickly met by the walls. Give yourself a weekend and see what changes you can do to your living room.
Time to clean house
Firstly, you need to remove everything that will get in the way. Your sofa, television, dining table, rugs, chairs, coffee table, drawers and cabinets, need to be put into safe storage. Use a trusted removal company that won’t damage your belongings and allow you to collect your goods whenever you wish. They have over 25 years of experience, with 250 cubic-feet storage containers.
Lighting and ceiling
Everything else can wait, the ceiling needs your attention first. Lay down an industrial wrap so your floor is protected. Next, you need to get some ladders into the room so you have access to the ceiling, up close and personal. The lighting will need to be removed if you intend to repaint or restyle the ceiling. You can just clean the ceiling if you like it the way it is, but you will need to use a cloth with a citrus-based cleaner. Once you have done this, you will need to select your lighting. If you intend to use the same light, give it a good dusting and clean with the appropriate cleanser, i.e. metal, wood, fabric, etc. The style of light will have a huge impact on the room, so pick your shade or design very carefully.
The walls and curtains
If you intend to give your wall a full makeover, you will need to buy one of two things. Either a wallpaper remover which is steam-powered or perhaps a paint remover. It depends on what kind of walls your living room has. You might have a layer of paint underneath a wall which in case you will need to use both, simultaneously. You should start on your walls as soon as you can preferably, on Saturday night and finishing in the afternoon of Sunday. This will give you time to work on the floor.
Skirting boards and floor
It would take long to remove the skirting boards and fitting a new style on, can be done as you remove the panels. However, you will need a finishing coat, such as gloss, satin or varnish.
All of this can be done in just two days if you plan ahead and have everything you need in your home, ready to be used. Once you have nailed down your style choices, the rest is just a simple case of replacing and finishing.
