Is sanding your own hardwood floors that difficult?
Regardless of whether you’re invigorating your current floorboards, or revealing old floorboards hidden under old carpets, there’s no more prominent approach to give your home a new lease of life than by redoing your flooring.
When you think of sanding your floor you immediately think of big heavy machinery, face masks and dust EVERYWHERE.
If you’re planning on staining your flooring a different colour/shade, then sanding your floor will also guarantee a more even finish.
If you would like to try sanding your floor DIY and on your own, there are a few things you should take on board before you get going.

1. Assess Your Floors
Almost all old wood floors can be saved and refurbished. Flooring that looks like it’s in bad condition, I’d recommend calling the experts to take a look, but if it looks in relatively good condition, you can probably manage this DIY project yourself.

2. Prep
You’ll need to look into using a sanding machine, a floor edger sander, and a floor polisher. You can do all these by hand but it wont look as perfect and will take you a very long time.
Make sure you’ve been instructed properly as to how the sanding machines. They’re often big, heavy and potentially dangerous if used wrong.

3. Sand
- You will need multiple grades of sandpaper to work through.
- Work diagonally on the grain. It will give a more even finish.
- Never start the sander while it’s resting on the floor.

4. Finish & Protect
This is the fun part. Your options are endless after sanding your own hardwood floors!
You can either:
- Wax the floors
- Varnish the floors
- paint the floors
Remember to always leave plenty of drying time for you desired finish before walking on the floors!
